General Wiccan Information Now for those who are just researching the Wiccan Way for the first time. Wicca has nothing to do with the stereotypical witch shown in movies and popular culture. It is not just for ugly old crones like in Macbeth and most of us cannot fly on brooms like Harry Potter. Wicca is a religion based on nature, perhaps the oldest religion practiced by humanity. By appealing to the Gods of water to gain a bountiful harvest our early ancestors were practicing wicca. The Celts in Europe did much to formalize the practices and establish guidelines for the practitioners of today. Witches do not worship Satan or the Devil, those concepts were actually invented by early Christians. They worship nature - the earth, wind, fire and water to enhance their everyday lives. As in any group, some people are inherently evil. It is from those few people we gain many misconceptions of witchcraft. Witches do not sacrifice children or any other heinous activities. The church in the middle ages made up many of the horror stories regarding witches in order to justify persecuting practitioners of paganism. The early church controlled almost everything. even kings and emperors bowed down to the early papal authority. Alternative beliefs were "bad for business" so the church had to demonize those who choose to believe differently. True practitioners of Wicca are rather quiet about their choice of religions. They may be among your friends or co workers and you would never know. Unlike other religions there are no long books of rules to follow to become Wiccan. The Wiccan lives by a simple code similar to the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors. A part of that code is the Threefold Law, which is amazingly similar to the principles taught in the popular DVD "The Secret" "THREE-FOLD LAW OF RETURN". Basically, this is the natural law of "cause and effect". The Goddess charges us to exercise great care in all that we, as Witches, do and say and even think. The Threefold Law takes the notion that "what we reap, we will sow", a few steps further..in fact, THREE steps further. For what we do "for good or for ill, shall be returned to us threefold." In light of this fact, Witches are loath to cause any harm, lest it be returned to them in spades!! This other guideline is known as the Wiccan Rede there are a few versions however the meaning is always the same, simple and to the point "As long as it harms no one, do what you will" The Rede states that a Wiccan is free to do what ever they want to, as long as it does not harm themselves or anyone else. Harm is normally considered to include manipulation, domination, attempts to control, physically injure, emotionally harm, or hurt another person or group in any way. This pretty much should end the discussion of wiccan love spells however they are available for those who choose to tempt fate. The Rede and Law obviously prevent a Witch/Wiccan from doing harm to themselves or to others, taking harmful drugs, etc. "This belief constantly reminds us that there are many consequences to our actions and we must consider all possible outcomes before acting.
